Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has partnered with the Office of Academic Resources of Chulalongkorn University to open the first worldwide Alibaba Cloud Academy Skills Center to cultivate a new generation of digital talents in Thailand through training programs and community initiatives. Additionally, Chulalongkorn University has leveraged Alibaba Cloud’s media solutions for university events livestreaming and online teaching for enhanced efficiency and convenience.

The new skills center, based on campus, is a cornerstone of Alibaba Cloud’s local talent nurturing initiatives, offering students of Chulalongkorn University and the general public access to free training courses, bootcamps with certifications, AI competition opportunities, and leadership development programs. The themes of the training courses cover a wide spectrum of cutting-edge technologies leading with Generative AI. A series of cloud computing theme courses will follow including elastic computing and big data analytics.

Apart from the talent’s empowerment program, Chulalongkorn University is the first educational institution in Thailand to deploy Alibaba Cloud’s media solutions for its cloud transformation. While traditional livestreaming methods entail hefty broadcast hardware investment and setup, Alibaba Cloud offers cloud-based solutions including ApsaraVideo Live and Object Storage Service (OSS) to support its Office of Academic Resources with stream management, production studio, online recording and editing, which enables the delivery of high-definition, seamless live audio and video services. This evolution in media technology offers an enhanced user experience with minimal latency during large-scale events such as the university’s virtual open house event with tens of thousands of viewers, online teaching and sessions.

Alibaba Cloud is dedicated to fostering the growth of digital talent in Thailand by providing free cloud-computing resources, training, and financial assistance to students, educators, and researchers through the previously launched Academic Empowerment Program (AAEP). This initiative aligns with Thailand 4.0, the country’s 20-year plan to encourage digital innovation and sustainable technologies. These advancements are built upon Tongyi Qianwen, the company’s proprietary foundation model, and are designed to streamline business operations and enhance user experiences.

Additionally, the cloud pioneer unveiled a multitude of AI innovations, including a digital avatar creation tool and AI text-to-image tools. These advancements aim to simplify the process of digital content creation for businesses across sectors.

Here’s an overview of the prominent AI innovations presented by Alibaba Cloud during the Apsara Conference:

Character Creation & AI Chat Model (Tongyi Xingchen): This model facilitates engaging, human-like interactions with virtual characters. It enables users to create their own characters and interact with them for personality-driven companionship, emotional support, and entertainment.
Reading AI Model (Tongyi ZoneWit): This AI model comprehends documents and share knowledge easily, helping users boost their work efficiency. Users can upload documents in various formats and the assistant will summarize, extract information, and answer related questions in either Chinese or English.
Customer Support AI Model (Tongyi Xiaomi): A vertical model designed for customer service scenarios. With improved capabilities in natural language understanding, analytics, and inference, the model comprehends customer intentions and delivers appropriate responses accordingly. Several large banking and insurance enterprises have already integrated this model to enhance their customer support systems.
Programming AI Model (Tongyi Lingma): This model aids developers in code generation, code explanation and code search. It can auto-complete codes, recommend changes and convert codes written in one programming language to another. This tool facilitates code development in a cost-effective and efficient way.
Healthcare AI Model (Tongyi Renxin): Equipped with comprehensive medical knowledge, this model serves as an intelligent healthcare assistant offering personalized health advice. It can comprehend medical reports, identify health issues through user interactions, and provide advice accordingly.
Legal AI Model (Tongyi Farui): Designed to help legal professionals increase their work productivity, this model can perform various tasks including legal research, answering law-related inquiries, providing analysis on litigation cases, and drafting legal documents.
Finance AI Model (Tongyi Dianjin): Pre-trained with a variety of financial information, this model can answer finance-related questions, extract key points from financial reports and analyses, and generate draft financial reports and charts, simplifying finance-related tasks for users. The model can manage complex and multiple queries through the cooperation of its LLM agents.
Virtual Character Generation Tool: Built upon Tongyi Wanxiang, Alibaba Cloud’s foundation model for AI image generation, this AI tool makes creating virtual character much easier. For example, merchants can create a virtual character in certain styles based on text or image prompts, and then generate product photographs with the virtual characters for product promotions.

9. Sketch-to-Stylist Picture Tool: This tool transforms rough sketches into colored images in a variety of styles, including oil painting, watercolor painting, and anime art, making art creation easier and encouraging creative innovation.
10. Digital Avatar Creation Tool: This tool simplifies the process of digital avatar creation. By extracting facial features from a three-minute video of an individual, it creates an animated avatar through 3D modeling. This tool aids businesses in creating unique digital avatars, which can be used to enhance customer engagement on e-commerce platforms.

Alibaba Cloud Launches Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 and Industry-specific Models to Support Customers Reap Benefits of Generative AI

New AI Model Building Platform and a suite of innovative cloud products launched to cater for the surging demand among customers and developers

Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, today announced the launch of Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, its latest large language model (LLM), along with new industry-specific models at its annual flagship tech event Apsara Conference. This release signifies another significant progress in Alibaba Cloud’s pursuit of cutting-edge AI innovation and its ongoing commitment to fuel digital transformation in businesses.

In response to the surging demand for powerful infrastructure supporting generative AI development, Alibaba Cloud also unveiled an AI model training platform and a series of innovative cloud products. New initiatives to bolster the open-source AI model community and global AI startups were also unveiled during the Conference. These resources are designed to enable customers, partners, developers, startups, and the wider community to fully harness the potential of generative AI.

“Currently, 80% of China’s technology companies and half of large model companies run on Alibaba Cloud. We aim to be the most open cloud in the era of AI. We hope that through this cloud, it will become easier and affordable for everyone to develop and use AI, so we can help, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to turn AI into huge productivity,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group.

Tongyi Qianwen 2.0: A Leap Forward in LLMs

Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, a generic LLM with a few hundreds of billions of parameters, represents a substantial upgrade from its predecessor launched in April. The model successfully exceeds some leading LLMs in benchmarks across domains ranging from language understanding, arithmetic problem solving, to question-answering.

With an expanded model size and improved alignment technique, Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 demonstrates remarkable capabilities in understanding complex instructions, copywriting, reasoning, memorizing, and preventing hallucinations. The model is now accessible to the public via its website and mobile applications, and available for developers through APIs.

Industry-specific Models: AI for Enhanced Business Performance

In addition, Alibaba Cloud also released new industry-specific models to help businesses unlock the transformative potential of generative AI across sectors for enhanced business performance. These sectors include customer support, legal counselling, healthcare, finance, documentation management, audio & video management, code development, and character creation.

Through these initiatives, we hope that our proprietary models can deliver real values to our customers to improve operation efficiency and stay competitive.”

GenAI Service Platform: A Comprehensive AI Model Building Platform

To cater to the burgeoning demand for generative AI, Alibaba Cloud introduced GenAI Service Platform, an all-in-one AI model building platform aimed at streamlining the model development and application building process. The platform offers a comprehensive suite of tools for data management, model deployment and valuation, and prompt engineering, making it easier for enterprises of all sectors to develop their enterprise-specific AI models.

Innovative Cloud Products to Drive Generative AI Development

To support the increasing computing and data processing needs required in generative AI development, Alibaba Cloud has launched a series of innovative cloud products across machine learning, container and database.

To improve efficiency of LLM models training and inference, Alibaba Cloud has upgraded its Platform for Artificial Intelligence (PAI), featuring enhanced computing power, network, storage, computing, container, model training and inference capabilities. AI and metaverse technology firm Futureverse has been training its text-to-music generation model on PAI leveraging its high performance and easy-to-scale capabilities to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
To expedite the process of building customized generative AI applications, Alibaba Cloud has enhanced its full range of database solutions – including cloud-native database PolarDB, cloud-native data warehouse AnalyticDB, and cloud-native multi-model database Lindorm – with its proprietary vector engine. It has also introduced LLM-powered database ecosystem tools, including the intelligent data analytics assistant Data Management Service (DMS) Data Copilot.
To enable a more scalable and efficient cloud infrastructure for application development, Alibaba Cloud unveiled Alibaba Cloud Container Compute Service (ACS),a pioneering serverless solution that integrates container services with its cloud computing resources. ACS enables businesses and developers to deploy the resources of Kubernetes, a container-centric management software, in a more cost-effective and user-friendly way.

Community Programs to Foster AI Development

In a bid to support the broader AI community, Alibaba Cloud has pledged to contribute more to open-source communities, including ModelScope, the company-initiated AI community with over 100 million model downloads since its inception a year ago. The cloud pioneer plans to opensource its 72 billion-parameter version of Tongyi Qianwen later this year.

Alibaba Cloud also announced the Alibaba Cloud Startup Catalyst Program, offering cloud computing resources, including cloud credit support of up to USD $120,000, free online learning memberships, and networking opportunities to promising global startups including AI companies.
