Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has unveiled an expanded suite of large language models and AI development tools, upgraded infrastructure offerings, and new support programs for global developers at its annual developer summit today. These advancements aim to empower developers worldwide to build innovative AI applications more cost-effectively and drive a thriving global generative AI community.

“Alibaba Cloud is committed to delivering real value to global developers through cutting-edge AI models, enhanced cloud infrastructure, and accessible support programs,” said Dongliang Guo, Vice President of International Business, Head of International Products and Solutions, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. “Together, we aim to spark more AI-driven innovations, benefiting startups, enterprises, and industries altogether across the globe.”

More Foundation Models and Development Tools for Developers

The latest Qwen models, Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary large language model family, including Qwen2.5 series with sizes ranging from 7billion to 72billion parameters, are now accessible via APIs on its generative AI development platform, Model Studio, for global developers to use. Additionally, multimodal AI models including vision understanding models such as Qwen-VL series, visual generation model Wanx2.1 (also known as Tongyi Wanxiang), and audio language model Qwen-Audio are also available for developers to access.

Developers can also leverage Tongyi Lingma, Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary AI coding assistant powered by the Qwen 2.5-coder model. The AI Programmer offers features such as code completion and optimization, debugging assistance, code snippet search and batch unit test generation. It provides developers with an efficient and seamless coding experience, significantly enhancing productivity and creativity.

In addition to a broader range of models, a slew of new AI development tools is also accessible by global developers on Model Studio. These tools include Workflow, which breaks down complex tasks into subtasks to enhance workflow control, and Agent, which supports multi-agent collaboration for planning and execution tasks. Other tools such as RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), which helps enhance the accuracy and reliability of generative AI models with external sources; Batch Reasoning, which generates responses simultaneously with multiple prompt inputs; AutoEval (Automated Model Evaluation), as well as model deployment and application observability services will be available by end of this month.

Upgraded Infrastructure for AI Development

In order to provide robust computing to facilitate AI and other critical workloads, Alibaba Cloud revealed that its 9th Generation Enterprise Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instance will be available in global markets starting April this year. The latest generation of ECS instances has notable performance enhancements compared to its previous iteration, including a 20% increase in computing efficiency. Additionally, by accelerating networks through eRDMA (elastic Remote Direct Memory Access), its performance in supporting high-performance computing, search recommendations, and Redis databases can be further improved by up to 50%.

The cloud pioneer has also announced its innovative Alibaba Cloud Container Compute Service (ACS) is now available for international customers starting from January 2025. Designed for simplified and optimized workload deployment using container technology, the ACS integrates container services with underlying cloud computing resources, significantly reducing costs and technical complexity and enabling developers to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure management.

New GenAI Program to Spark Creativity

To foster innovation, Alibaba Cloud introduced the Alibaba Cloud GenAI Empowerment Program, a dedicated support program for global developers and startups leveraging its Qwen models to build generative AI applications. Participants in the program can gain support including free cloud credits, training workshops, invitation to tech shows and demo days, as well as product co-marketing opportunities. This program is designed to help developers and startups accelerate their generative AI projects while connecting with a broader ecosystem of innovators.

Global Developers and Customers Leveraging Qwen for Cutting-Edge Applications

Axcxept, a Japanese company specializing in AI products such as voice assistants, has developed an open-source, lightweight AI model called EZO based on Qwen 2.5 LLM. The EZO model outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) models in areas such as coding, information extraction, math, reasoning, roleplay, and writing in Japanese. With low latency and robust performance, EZO is tailored to serve industries such as healthcare and public institutions in Japan, ensuring secure and efficient AI applications.

“Qwen 2.5 has significantly enhanced its ability to process Japanese, giving it a competitive edge over other models. With Axcxept’s proprietary training process, we have developed a Japanese LLM that delivers unmatched accuracy,” said Kazuya Hodatsu, CEO of Axcxept Inc.

OxValue.AI, a deep-tech venture from the University of Oxford, uses Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-based multimodal AI models for AI-driven company valuation services. By processing and analyzing text and audio data related to financing, R&D, and operations, OxValue achieves precise and cost-efficient valuation assessments tailored to corporate clients.

Alibaba Cloud Unveils ACS for International Customers to Revolutionize Workload Deployment

Industry-leading cloud-native container service allows scale on-demand to optimize resources while reducing overall computing costs by up to 55%

Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, today announced the international debut of its innovative Alibaba Cloud Container Compute Service (ACS), designed to simplify and optimize workload deployment using container technology. ACS will be available for international customers starting from January 2025 including in Thailand.

ACS, which uses Kubernetes as its interface, offers a serverless container service that provides compute resources compliant with container standards. This new product eliminates the need for users to manage underlying nodes and clusters, significantly reducing costs and technical barriers associated with container deployment. It also allows customers to pay-as-you-go, helping them avoid over allocated, and scale on demand, enabling the optimization of costs during periods of high and low usage. 

“As the deployment of workloads on container technology becomes increasingly prevalent, we developed a more accessible solution that would anticipate the evolving needs of our customers,” said Jiangwei Jiang, General Manager of Infrastructure Products, Alibaba Cloud. “ACS represents a big step forward in how businesses can utilize container technology, offering cost-efficiency and ease of use to support businesses unleashing productivity.”

Container technology, a form of virtualization that bundles programs with everything they need to run, makes it easy to deploy applications consistently across different hardware and systems. The benefits in terms of efficiency and resource optimization have made containers a mainstream development method.

According to Gartner, the container management market has experienced over 20% growth in the past year, with projections indicating a market value of US$4.5 billion by 2028. Gartner also predicts that by 2027, more than 75% of all AI deployments will utilize container technology as the underlying compute environment.

Addressing challenges in container adoption

ACS is designed to overcome the complexities associated with Kubernetes configuration, resource management, and on-demand elasticity. By integrating containers and resources based on Alibaba Cloud’s Shenlong architecture to allow maximum scaling of computing resources, ACS offers a solution capable of reducing computing power costs by up to 55%.

“ACS has transformed the container orchestration service into a comprehensive computing product. Users benefit by paying only for the compute capacity that they use,” Jiang added.

This product is fully compatible with Kubernetes technologies and supports seamless migration to the cloud for both open-source ecosystems as well as self-developed products. This is notable in that users can continue using familiar Kubernetes management methods and file formats. There is also no need to pre-purchase nodes so users can simply declare their workload requirements and ACS will match them with the necessary underlying compute resources. This minimizes the demand for additional costs and human resources in infrastructure maintenance.

Proven technology recognized by customer and industry

Alibaba Cloud Container Service supports different architectures and can be deployed in multiple cloud environment including public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. Currently, Alibaba Cloud Container Service has been applied across a wide range of industries.

Moka, a leading HR management SaaS company in China, has already experienced significant benefits from implementing ACS. The maintenance-free nature of ACS clusters has allowed Moka to focus on core business priorities rather than infrastructure management. Additionally, the on-demand scaling and pay-per-use model has given Moka needed flexibility, especially during peak recruitment seasons.

Recently, Alibaba Cloud has been named a Leader in the 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Container Management for the second consecutive year. Supporting Innovation in Japanese-language LLMs

In Japan, Lightblue, a University of Tokyo startup that develops AI solutions such as image analysis and natural language processing with the aim of AI democratization, has utilized Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen to support the development of its Japanese-language LLMs.

By leveraging Alibaba Cloud’s advanced architecture and training capabilities, Lightblue has been able to enhance its offerings for East Asian languages, specifically Japanese. The company also employed other cloud solutions from Alibaba Cloud such as Elastic Compute Service, Server Load Balancer and Object Storage Service which provides efficient and secure cloud services.

This collaboration highlights Alibaba Cloud’s commitment to supporting technology startups in pursuing their innovative goals.

Revolutionizing image capture with great flexibility

In Malaysia, Pictureworks, a leading provider of innovative photography imaging solutions, has harnessed Alibaba Cloud’s extensive AI and cloud technologies to revolutionize the flexibility and quality of high-resolution image capture.

This collaboration has been successfully implemented at seven premier tourist attractions across Asia, with additional projects underway. Notably, by utilizing Alibaba Cloud’s robust and secure technologies, Pictureworks has produced over 150,000 photos at an award-winning theme park in Hong Kong.

Key solutions provided by Alibaba Cloud include its Platform for Artificial Intelligence (PAI), Function Compute, and Object Storage Services (OSS). PAI is designed to streamline the machine learning lifecycle, offering a fully managed service for deploying machine learning models, which enables Pictureworks to swiftly adjust AI models as needed within tight timelines.

By utilizing Alibaba Cloud’s LLM Qwen and Model Studio platform, Atlas has implemented a digital chatbot that offers 24/7 customer support, efficiently addressing partner inquiries related to booking processes and payment options.

Since partnering with Alibaba Cloud in 2021, Atlas has achieved a remarkable 45% reduction in operational costs. This collaboration has helped Atlas evolve from a startup in Singapore to a leading player in the industry, transforming the low-cost flight market with its cutting-edge travel platform.

Drunk Elephant, a renowned skincare brand acquired by Shiseido in 2019, deployed Alibaba Cloud’s latest foundation model Qwen-max in its new customer chatbot named DRUNKGPT to enhance customer interactions in China. This 24/7 AI-powered skincare assistant responds to inquiries about product recommendations and skincare tips with nuanced and personalized responses. The collaboration aims to deliver a richer brand experience through innovative digital engagement opportunities.

To improve the accuracy and relevance of its responses, DRUNKGPT was further trained on the brand’s knowledge database and optimized using various Alibaba Cloud AI services, including Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT), Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), vector recall, and a multi-agent framework.

AI Nutritionist with Personalized Tips

Haleon China, a prominent consumer health company, is utilizing Alibaba Cloud’s Large Language Model (LLM) Qwen, along with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology to launch a specialized AI nutrition assistant solution called iNutrition for its Chinese consumers. This AI-powered expert accurately interprets consumer inquiries, delivering valuable nutritional guidance. It results from the integration of Qwen’s robust capabilities and Haleon’s extensive internal nutritional knowledge base.
